Love, Intimacy, and Sexuality in Old Age

"It is better to have loved and lost than never to have lost at all." -- Samuel Butler

Sex Advice for Baby Boomers
Sex advice is offered for older couples who would like to receive a greater satisfaction.

Concepts:
Changes in Women's Sex Life Due to Aging
This link displays an article that tells a little more about the physiological changes a woman goes through as she ages.

Sexuality and Seniority
Instead of focusing on the things that go wrong and illness that become of having sexual intercourse, this article focuses on how sex may help prevent sexual dysfunction in men.

Older Americans Have Active Sex Lives
This journal article is very interesting. It is surprising the statistics that they show.

I chose this chapter because I am curious. Who isn't curious about sexual activity, especially in older couples. When I was younger, I would have never thought that my grandparents would have been sexually active. After this chapter and more research, I have learned that it is important for older couples to remain sexually active. If one is alone or single, they often go out and look forward to dating.
After reading the section on women and age-related physiological, I now know what to look forward to, unfortunately. It is interesting that smoking can lead to an earlier onset of menopause. Fortunately for men, they don't go through many physiological changes but they do go through a similar situation as women. Instead of menopause, they experience viropause.
Definitions:
Menopause-cessation of the menstrual cycle
Viropause- male menopause
Sexuality- feelings of sexual desire, expression, and intimacy, not only sexual activity.
Penile Implant- a device surgically implanted in the penis to reverse impotence and allow an erection.
Refractory Period- in men, the time between ejaculation and another erection.
Orgasm- climax of sexual excitement.
Climacteric- in women, the decline in estrogen production and the loss of reproductive ability; in men, the decline in testosterone.
Erection- the swelling of the penis or clitoris in sexual excitement.
Impotence-the inability to have or maintain an erection.
Intimacy- freedom to express and respond to human closeness

Meeting My New Grandma

That lady I met in the nursing home,
she looked so much like Grandma.
I thought it was her for a while,
but then she turned around and wasn’t wearing a smile.

Mom pulled her over
and said she was Grandma.
How could this be?
My grandma would never ignore me.

She did look a lot like her,
and dress like her too.
But this is not the Grandma I once knew,
This is not Grandma, what mom said can’t be true.

This Grandma was talking and making no sense;
she had tears and her eyes seemed so sad.
This is some other girls Grandma, not mine.
My Grandma is healthy and happy and fine.

Mom was talking to the nurse,
about a disease call Alzheimer’s.
That doesn’t have a cure,
and Grandma has it, the doctors are sure.

She does not recognize me,
she stumbles and she mumbles.
She’s forgot everything that she used to know.
She is a different person, a new Grandma Lo.

The new grandma looks just like the old,
but in her mind it is different.
She may not be the Grandma I love and know,
but she will always be my Grandma Lo.
